Gunma Contemporary Museum

Originally completed in 1974, this museum continues to feel contemporary due to its innovative design. The current project involved the addition of three new exhibition galleries.

Architect Arata Isozaki pursued a high level of lighting precision through repeated experimentation and verification. The main gallery is designed in the form of an inverted table, with concealed fluorescent lamps providing indirect lighting to establish the base illuminance.
During the day, natural light is introduced through surrounding clerestory windows, while at night, lighting concealed within the architecture supplements the required illumination.

In addition, low-voltage luminaires are installed within a 7.2-meter-long slit integrated into the low ceiling, delivering finely controlled light through lenses to precisely illuminate the exhibited artworks.
