Lighting Design for a New Education and Research Building Promoting Interdisciplinary Integration

Troyer Memorial Arts and Science Hall

Following the completion of the ICU New Gymnasium in 2018, we undertook the lighting design for the Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall at International Christian University (ICU), an education and research building promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.
The building was jointly designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates and Nihon Sekkei.

Facing the quadrangle, the façade expresses the warmth of wood. Inside, a multi-story atrium known as Hub Central encourages interaction beyond disciplinary boundaries, with wooden louvers visualizing the flow of natural light and air.

To preserve the dynamic quality of the wood-based architecture, general lighting was integrated within the louvers, while indirect lighting behind layered wooden wall panels enhances depth and texture.
Custom-designed pendant lights suspended through the atrium softly illuminate the space with a simple yet delicate presence.
