A new wooden sauna, “SAZAE,” has been introduced at SANA MANE, a resort-style glamping facility on Naoshima, known as a center of contemporary art.
As part of the second phase of development, Architectural Lighting Group (ALG) was responsible for the lighting design, balancing sauna functionality with artistic expression.
At night, underwater lighting embedded in the cold plunge pool walls casts rippling reflections onto the exterior, giving SAZAE an organic presence.
Inside, floor-level linear lighting connects the interior and exterior, while minimal illumination emphasizes the beauty of shadow.
Indirect lighting inspired by traditional Japanese sensibilities creates a meditative atmosphere, where the interplay of natural light from above and artificial light from below encourages quiet introspection.
